Many people wonder what is the source of their name, what it
means, if there are a lot of users, and if yes, where do they live ? The
"Dutch Repertorium of familynames" is one of the most useful sources. In 1947 a
census was taken. It has been a large operation and all the information was
written down in registers made up by provence.
A large number of names from the east of Holland were taken from
farmnames. Some of them are already used in the 14th century. Most of the names
excisted already in the year 1811 when Napoleon obliged every head of the family
to choose a name and register at the Town Hal.
Because many people could't read or write and there were no
grammar-rules like nowadays, many names were written in several ways in official
documents. The name Van Hunnik was found back as "The Hun, Hunink and
Huinik".

The meaning and source of the name Van Hunnik
In 1986 I found a paper familytree which was made in handwritten text by Jan van Hunnik. Jan made it in the seventies and travelled a lot to meet the familymembers abroad. He did a lot of research and still puzzles to find more historical information.
The oldest anscestor known in official documents is Gerrit Hendriks van Huninck, born in the neighbourhood of a small village called Aalten near the German border. It must have been een poor men who travelled (walking) to Bennekom to find work. Probably his parents were called Derk Navis and Derkje in de Vosheurne.
The village Aalten was part of the Munster church region in that period (+ 1660). All information is to be found in the church archives. It's good to understand that only a few people were able to read and write. So every name was written the way it sounded.
In 1811 the french emperor Napoleon introduced municipalities and every citizen was obliged to be registered in the place he lived. We assume that the children of Johannes and Gerrit (cousins living in Veenendaal) decided to choose the name of the place where their grandfather Dirk Gerritsz came from. Most people made the same choice to choose the name of their roots. In our case the name Van Hunnik indicates on the name of a farm or small neigbourhood Huinik or Huinink. Reserach showed the excistance of a small neighbourhood on old maps between the places Borculo and Aalten. In the same neighbourhood was in that period a brook 'Hunekerbeek / Hunekerbrook'.
