All living Van Hunnik are related to Michael Middelhoven (1562-1638)  and Sara Andriesdochter Hessix (1565- aft. 1626). We're lucky that the famous Dutch painter Frans Hals made portraits of this couple on occasion of their 40th weddinganniversary in 1626. The portrait of Michael was confisquated by the German occupators during Word War II, then it was part of the Paris Schloss collection. It was never found back. The portrait of Sara is part of the Gulbelkian collection in Portugal. But the portrait travels around the world in several exhibitions. In 2006 it was in Vancouver Canada.

The relation between the Van Hunnik and Middelhoven families was accomplished by the marriage of
Dirk Gerritsz van Hunnik (1736-1783) and Aeltje Middelhoven (1748-1832. This marriage took place on April 20th 1766 in Veenendaal. It was a remarkable one, because the the families were very different. The Middelhoven's were a rich family and had a lot of influence in the small community of Veenendaal at that time. Dirk Gerritsz was thirty years old and Aeltje only eighteen. She became pregnant and probably that's the reason they got married. Their two sons Johannes and Gerrit are the only two ancestors of all Van Hunnik's.Lucky for us that history tells more about the Middelhoven family and so our history goes further back in time.
